UNDERSTANDING MIS\/DISINFORMATION\nLANDSCAPE IN MALAYSIA FROM THE CONTEXT OF DIGITAL PLATFORMS AS A SOURCE OF\nRADICALISATION<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>

<\/span><\/i><\/p>

The\ninformation ecosystem has evolved rapidly in recent years, with digital\nplatforms playing a significant role in the widespread and open dissemination\nof information. Social media platforms, in particular, have become central to\nvarious activities such as socializing, knowledge sharing, and media\nconsumption. However, their accessibility and ease of use also make them\npowerful tools for spreading false and misleading information. The low barriers\nto information exchange on social media can significantly influence public\nopinion and contribute to radicalisation.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

In\nresponse to these ongoing challenges, this research aims to explore the role of\ndigital platforms in the spread of misinformation and disinformation in\nMalaysia and their potential links to radicalisation. The study will examine\nthe types of misinformation, their modes of dissemination, and their possible\ncontributions to extremist ideologies. By analysing various digital platforms\nand assessing the impact of digital narratives on Malaysia\u2019s social, political,\nand cultural landscapes, this research seeks to deepen understanding of how\nmisinformation fuels radicalisation processes and identify effective\ninterventions to mitigate this issue.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

The\nstudy will involve stakeholders from government agencies, academic\ninstitutions, and civil society organizations (CSOs) in Malaysia. These include\nthe Ministry of Digital, the Ministry of Communications, the National Security\nCouncil (MKN), the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP), the Ministry of National Unity,\nthe Ministry of Home Affairs, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia\nCommission (MCMC), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Teknologi Mara\n(UiTM), and CyberSecurity Malaysia.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Thematic\nanalysis will be employed to examine narratives circulating on social media\nplatforms and identify emerging patterns. Additionally, sentiment analysis will\nbe utilized to map and analyse hate speech networks and their connections to\nextremist narratives.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

As\na key output, this research will include a comprehensive literature review and\nin-depth interviews with experts and stakeholders from various sectors. The\nfindings will inform research-based recommendations and guidelines for\ncounter-terrorism practitioners, policymakers, and social media platforms. The\ngoal is not only to identify and understand current narratives related to\nmisinformation and disinformation but also to assess the role of social media\nin facilitating their spread, particularly concerning terrorism-related\ncontent.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
