The Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism\n(SEARCCT) had successfully organised the third \u201cDeveloping a\nWhole-of-Government Soft Power Response to Terrorism and Extremism Workshop\u201d\nfrom 25 to 27 October 2016. The workshop was attended by 97 participants from\nMinistry of Defence, Royal Malaysian Police, Ministry of Higher Education, and\nthe Ministry of Education from the southern region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop was aimed at sensitising the participants on\nthe emerging threats of DAESH as well as to provide a platform to exchange\nviews and experiences in addressing the threat. Throughout the workshop,\nparticipants were exposed to the current terrorism and extremism trends in\nMalaysia and the need for all parties to play their part in countering these\nthreats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop was graced by Supt. Aemran Mustafa, the\nDirector of Planning and Training Division of SEARCCT. In his opening remarks,\nSupt. Aemran Mustafa stated that it takes a network to defeat a terrorist\nnetwork. Therefore, he highlighted that all government agencies needed to\nenhance their networking in order to combat terrorism particulary the emerging\nthreat currently posed by DAESH. He stressed that the increasing number of\nMalaysians joining DAESH in Iraq and Syria should be taken seriously and there\nwas an urgent need for all agencies to enhance its readiness to counter this\nthreat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the topics covered during the workshop included \u201cDAESH\n101\u201d by Dr. Kevin Fernandez (SEARCCT), \u201cInvolvement of Malaysians in DAESH\u201d and\n\u201cDAESH Messaging\u201d by ACP Azman Omar (Royal Malaysia Police), \u201cDAESH\nExploitation of the Internet\u201d by Ms. Jasmine Jawhar (SEARCCT), \u201cDAESH\nNarratives and Counter Narratives\u201d by Mr. Asrul Daniel Ahmad (SEARCCT), \u201cLegal\nPerspective on Counter Terrorism\u201d by Mr. Mohamad Mustaffa P Kunyalam (Attorney\nGeneral Chambers), \u201cCommunity Engagement in Fighting Against Terrorism\u201d by Mr.\nK.Shan (Asia Foundation), \u201cIslamic Perspective on DAESH\u201d by Ustaz Engku Ahmad\nFadzil bin Engku Ali (Institute For Strategic Studies Islam Malaysia, IKSiM)\nand \u201cRehabilitation and Reintegration of Terrorism Detainees\u201d by ACP Adinaraina\nSubramaniam (Correctional Academy Malaysia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The participants were then engaged through a table top\nexercise about a student at a Higher Learning Institution who was exposed to\nextremism activities. Here, the participants were required to discuss\nappropriate actions and measures that could be taken by parents and communities.\nIn essence, the workshop was successfully completed with participants being\nmore aware of the issues of terrorism and extremism.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
