ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON THE RESEARCH FINDINGS: ‘UNDERSTANDING AND PREVENTING ONLINE EXTREMISM AND VIOLENT EXTREMISM IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

On 5 February 2026, Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism (SEARCCT) hosted a roundtable discussion at JW Marriott Hotel Kuala Lumpur to present and deliberate key findings from its collaborative research with the Hedayah Centre, United Arab Emirates (UAE), titled “Understanding and Preventing Online Extremism and Violent Extremism in Southeast Asia.”

The first session was moderated by Mr. Kennimrod Sariburaja, Director of Research & Publications, SEARCCT, with Ms. Emma Allen, Director of Research Operations, Hedayah Centre, presenting the main research findings.

In the second session, participants were briefed on findings from SEARCCT’s study, “Exploring Gaming Spaces for PCVE in Malaysia,” presented by Ms. Nurul Hidayah Mohd Noar, Research Officer, SEARCCT.

Representatives from relevant ministries and agencies engaged in robust discussions, contributing policy-relevant insights grounded in research evidence. Overall, the session strengthened inter-agency coordination, reinforced a whole of-government approach, and enhanced collective understanding of Malaysia’s online extremism landscape.
